The school is balking at purchasing another Mac, as we are the only group that still uses one (the only other group that used them, the TV production class, switched away from their Macs in 2020). Fortunately it hasn't failed mid-show on us yet, but there have been close calls during rehearsals for the past two years or so. Current setup is a mid-2014 22" iMac running QLab 4 with Audio and Video licensing, primarily utilized for one play and one musical per year. Ultimately the title asks the TL DR question, but because I know requirements vary and will probably affect the answers, here goes the Too Long version: It does sound like the runner-up would've been SCS, although needing extra software to get the mapping and more complicated effects is kind of a turn-off as well. We're now on the same page with QLab being the industry standard and while not a lot of our students continue in theater after high school, he agreed that it makes the most sense for those cases where it does happen that we should be using the industry standard, and he's going to take that and run with the educational purpose of having the correct system.
